Luke first learned about Idaho values as a boy on our family farm in Post Falls, Northern Idaho. His first job was shoeing horses and he was proud to be a part of 4-H growing up. From there, he attended the College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. He earned his law degree from the University of Idaho College of Law in Moscow. That's where he met his wife, Tara. They currently live in Coeur d'Alene where they continue to show their love for Idaho values and their community.
Small business is the backbone of our economy and our communities.
Luke and Tara own a small business. They co-own a law firm, Smith + Malek, with their partner Peter that they started in 2015 and has grown to now support 20 employees. Luke understands small businesses and the struggles they face. At the firm, he spends the majority of his time focusing on business and health care cases.
Luke is a former prosecutor. He started his legal career prosecuting crimes in the Kootenai County Prosecutor's office and understands the importance of keeping our communities safe.
Luke was an elected representative in Idaho's legislature. He served for six years, from 2012 until 2018 as a pro-life, pro-Second Amendment legislator. In the legislature, he used his prosecutorial experience as a member of the Judiciary, Rules and Administration committee.
He served as vice-chairman on that committee to work on laws that support law enforcement and keep Idahoans safe. He also served on the Health and Welfare Committee where he worked to make sure we had an Idaho solution to getting Idahoans insured. He served on the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee where He worked to expand access to health care, behavioral health services, and education throughout the state.
He co-chaired the interim committee on broadband access where he helped to expand much needed broadband access to rural Idaho businesses and schools. He helped the Professional Firefighters of Idaho successfully pass legislation, after nearly twenty years of trying, to protect firefighters and their families. Luke received the following recognition as a legislator:
